This week is the first week of school for our Year-Round schools. Since I am on D track I don't start until August 15, however, I am looking at my new class list and preparing to meet my new Gang. I find myself evaluating my teaching practices, planning for the first day as well as the first few weeks, being very intentional with the tone I set in the classroom. I'm rethinking procedures I need to teach. I know I need to allow students plenty of time to practice those procedures.
I already have the paper work for the four resource students in my class. I'll meet with the Special Education teacher next week in order to discuss schedules and special accommodations. I don't want to have too many preconceived ideas about any student, but I don't want to be unprepared, either. I already have plans in place to be 'buddies' with the autistic classes again this year.
I'm looking forward to a great year ahead.
Sounds like you are well on your way to being ready for the new year. I did not know many schools where doing year round school. Our district quit year round about 5 years ago.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to believe that school is ready to begin again. It sounds like you are getting well prepared for the year. I start not too many days after you, but I am not year round. I totally understand when you talk about preconceived ideas. I try to go in with a fresh slate, but I do like to be prepared for those situations that have potential to throw you off guard. Good luck with your year.
ReplyDeleteStephen,
ReplyDeleteI taught at a year round school in NC, so coming to year round school in Utah was comfortable. Our district has many elementary campuses on the year round schedule. All middle schools and high schools have the traditional schedule. Our district is saving money with year rounds schools because they don't have to build as many new campuses to accommodate all the students. I've been at it for 10 years, but now that my personal children are in high school and college I wouldn't mind going back to a traditional schedule.
Cool blog warrin
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that you blog site looks so cool. if it weren't for the 6036 class and the Ed. blog assignment, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to visit all the different blog sites i've seen and witness for myself the wonderful things outside my box. Great job.
